Bai li WIEGMANS
Bai Li was born in China in 1998 and raised in The Netherlands. She was adopted at the age of 1 after spending a little over a year in an orphanage. During her time in the orphanage, Bai Li's caretaker discovered her love for movement. She sang songs to which Bai Li would dance. So, upon moving to the Netherlands, her parents enrolled her in ballet classes at the age of 3. However, she soon discovered other dance styles such as jazz, contemporary, and hip hop. Her passion and love for dance continued to grow, and her training expanded alongside her regular school life.
At the age of 16, Bai Li was accepted into the pre-education program at the Fontys Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. The following year, she entered the main education program, specialising in Contemporary Urban, and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2019.
While still in the final year of her studies, Bai Li kickstarted her professional career at age 20 after signing with the African Contemporary company ACE in Birmingham, UK. Successfully completing her degree with full time work. Bai Li toured and taught across the UK for over a year, before returning to the Netherlands due to Covid-19, where she transitioned into a freelance career. She has since continued working nationally and internationally, touring her own work and performing with a range of companies, including Korea’s National Contemporary Dance Company, China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, and Het Nationale Theater.
Throughout the years, she has had the pleasure of working with choreographers such as Samir Calixto, Wim Vandekeybus, Akiko Kitamura, Cecilia Moisio, Vincent Mantsoe, and more.
In addition to her career as a performer, Bai Li has ventured into creating her own work. You can find out more about her creations here.
